A new report from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Housing (CTBUH) reveals that 28 "twisted skyscrapers" have either been built or are under construction.
A new industry study of twisted buildings around the world has revealed that 'twisted skyscrapers' are more popular than ever. The tallest of these "twisted skyscrapers" is the 632m Shanghai Tower. It is currently the second tallest building in the world.

The list includes several recent projects, including the 306-metre Cayan Tower in Dubai, designed by SOM; In Canada, MAD Architects designed Absolute World Towers, also known as the Marilyn Monroe Tower, and Bjac Ingalls designed a new residential tower in Miami.

The list also includes several twisted high-rise projects in the works, from the elaborately conceived Diamond Tower in Saudi Arabia to a plant-covered Tower in Taiwan that looks like a DNA strand.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Housing defines a "twisted tower" as one whose floors gradually twist, or whose surfaces gradually twist to increase height. It claims that the first twisted skyscraper was the "Turning Torso" in Malmo, Sweden, completed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava just 11 years ago, in 2005.

The Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Housing says the growing trend of Twist Towers is "creating a new generation of landmark buildings in the world". The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Housing report acknowledges that there are a number of projects that are not included in the 28 Twist Towers listed above that are still stalled.
